What we're about

The Three G's

Everything at Rafferty's is built around three things Ed believes make the difference between a meal and an evening.

G

Great Food

An à la carte menu that changes with what Cornwall is doing, a proper Sunday lunch, and a Little Ones menu that isn't an afterthought.

G

Great Wine

A list built with our suppliers so you can taste something genuinely special by the glass without having to commit to the bottle.

G

Great Service

Thirty years of it, from Simpsons-in-the-Strand to Rick Stein's — brought to a small dining room in St Merryn.

“The Three G's: Great Food, Great Wine and Great Service. Get those right and the rest looks after itself.” Ed Rafferty, Owner

Our Story

From the Strand
to St Merryn

Originally from Ireland, Ed found his restaurateur wings at seventeen on the trainee manager programme at Simpsons-in-the-Strand in London. Some years in the capital followed, then time spent travelling — managing restaurants and bars around the world and building a passion for good food and wine.

In 2001 he landed in Padstow at Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant. Over the next decade he worked his way up to Restaurant Manager, before joining Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage in Plymouth as general manager.

Then came the decision to do it properly — his own place, a few minutes up the road from the harbour, where the wine list matters as much as the plate.

The Bar

A glass of fizz
by the wood burner

We take our drinks as seriously as our food. There's a stylish cocktail bar out in the courtyard, with a list of classics alongside a few less familiar drinks we think deserve to be better known.

Or stay inside: a pre-dinner glass in front of the wood burner, a Hendrick's and Fever-Tree, a cold Estrella Damm. There's a proper selection of hot drinks too, for the end of the evening.
